Rust Swing Rail ( Gymnocrex plumbeiventris )

Gymnocrex is a genus of three very different squacco species found in Indonesia and New Guinea. There are long-legged birds with a bare facial skin. The Rosenberg Rail ( Gymnocrex rosenbergii ) has a cobalt blue face, which contrasts strongly with the black and chestnut plumage. The rust swing Rail ( Gymnocrex plumbeiventris ) and the Talaudralle ( Gymnocrex talaudensis ) are similar in plumage to the Central and South American species of the genus Aramides. The Talaudralle is 33 to 35 cm, the largest species, followed by the rust swing Rail with 30 to 33 cm and the Rosenberg with Rail 30 cm. The Talaudralle, which was only discovered in 1996 and the Rosenberg squacco apply in their stock as endangered or threatened. Rust Ralle swing of the two subspecies G. p. plumbeiventris and G. p. hoeveni exist, is considered safely.

Habitat

The Rosenberg Rail inhabits primary forest and old secondary forests and bushy disused rice fields at altitudes from sea level to 1500 m. The rust Swing Rail is found in primary forests, swamp forests, wetlands, wet grass areas near rivers and lakes as well as in monsoon forests of the lowlands to altitudes of 1200 m to 1600 m. The Talaudralle frequented damp grassland and bushland and swampy woodland.

Food behavior

All three species are insectivores.

Area of ​​distribution: Maluku Utara ( Morotai, Halmahera and Bacan ), Misool, New Guinea ( with the exception of the South) and the islands of Karkar and New Ireland for the nominate G. p. plumbeiventris; southern New Guinea and the Aru Islands for the subspecies G. p. hoeveni.
  • Talaudralle ( Gymnocrex talaudensis ). Area of ​​distribution: Karakelang, Talaud Islands.
