György Sándor

György Sándor [ ɟørɟ ʃa ndor ː ] ( born September 21, 1912 in Budapest, Hungary, † December 12, 2005 in New York, NY ) was a Hungarian- American pianist.

He studied at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, piano with Béla Bartók, composition with Zoltan Kodaly. 1939 Sándor moved to the U.S., not for political reasons but because it spoke to the American way of life, and took 1943 the U.S. citizenship. He achieved fame by the premiere of the 3rd Piano Concerto by Bartók. In addition, he played the complete piano works of Bela Bartok twice; for the first recording on Vox 1965 he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque. He also played a the complete piano works of Zoltan Kodaly and Prokofiev Sergei (1968).

Sándor taught 1956-1961 at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, from 1961 to 1981 at the University of Michigan and since 1982 at the Juilliard School of Music. He wrote a number of piano transcriptions, including of Dukas ' Sorcerer's Apprentice, and in 1981 a book on the art of piano playing.
