Half Moon Island

Half Moon Iceland ( German " Crescent Island" ) is a small, sub-Antarctic island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands. It is located 1300 meters north-west of Livingston Iceland in the McFarlane Strait which separates Livingston from Greenwich Iceland. From the Antarctic Peninsula Half Moon Iceland is about 120 km away.

The crescent ( " crescent " ) - shaped island is the crater of a former volcano dar. While the southern and northern area of the island is mountainous and rise to a height of 101 m, the middle part extends only a few meters above sea level. In this area, at the Meguante Cove, Argentina operates since 1955 an Antarctic research base, the Cámara station.

Half Moon Iceland is home to numerous seabirds, such as the reins penguin (Pygoscelis antarctica), the Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus ) and the Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea ).
