Hamar Cathedral

The cathedral of Hamar (Norwegian: Hamar Domkirke ) is the bishop's church of the Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of Hamar, which includes the regions of Hedmark and Oppland. In the village there was previously a cathedral that was destroyed in the War of the Three Crown Sweden; the Cathedral ruins of Hamar is now protected by a glass case.

History

With award of the municipal law of 1849, the construction was adopted, which was already collected two years later the cathedral. The Diocese of Hamar was, however, completely separated from the Diocese of Oslo in 1864. Architect of the church was the German Heinrich Ernst Schirmer. Built in the Romanesque Revival style in 1866 and consecrated church has survived virtually unchanged since optically completion of construction. However, there were some changes during the 1920s in the interior. Starting in 1950, the interior was renovated Arnstein Arne Berg and restored to its simpler predecessor state. From the old features only the organ loft, the baptismal font and two silver candlesticks were left. Architecture and Facilities

The nave rises above the side aisles, and is therefore attributable to the basilica type. In contrast to the rather austere church is the main portal is quite lavishly decorated.

Most unusual piece of equipment is the main altar and the altarpiece that the risen Jesus without a beard, but this is shown with short hair and was only created during the restoration of the 50's by Henrik Sørensen.

The ceiling paintings are by Arve Hagen and show the Holy Spirit and angels playing musical instruments. The pulpit carvings made ​​Anthon Røvik, which also shows a portrait of Francis of Assisi. The windows are decorated with paintings that are probably inspired by medieval tapestries.
