Hambantota

Hambantota ( sin. හම්බන්තොට; . அம்பாந்தோட்டை tam ) is a town in the Southern Province in Sri Lanka. It is the headquarters of the Hambantota District in the census and had 11,213 inhabitants. Currently, numerous infrastructure projects will be implemented in the city environment. These include a new port, an international airport and sports facilities.

History

When the tsunami that followed the earthquake in the Indian Ocean in 2004, the city was added considerable damage. In the wake numerous infrastructure projects with Chinese funds and under the influence of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was born in the region, initiated. In 2013, the Summit of the Commonwealth of Nations was held in the city.

Sports

As an infrastructure project a cricket stadium for international matches was built with Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium. Among other things, there were games of Cricket World Cup 2011 and the ICC World Twenty20 2012. Furthermore, the city applied for the hosting of the Commonwealth Games in 2018, but lost in the selection against the Australian Gold Coast. In 2011, here the inaugural South Asian beach games were held.
