Hamborger Veermaster

De Hamborger Veermaster ( High German: Hamburg's four-master ) is a Shanty in Low German with English chorus.

Tradition

The song is an adaptation of the English Shanty "The Banks Of Sacramento ". The melody comes from a hymn, a Minstrel ( verse ), the refrain of the text from the English ballad " Ten thousand miles away". The song was sung to sail hoisting of seafarers from the Low German language area.

In addition, it was included in student Kommers books and in the song treasure of the youth movement, then in numerous songbooks and albums.

For the interpretation

The " Hamborger Veermaster " has a socially critical background. Derlei texts on ship, captain, equipment and food ( the ship's biscuit, because of the bread maggots of itself running ) to sing one of the most known from the Ethnology mockery customs ( joking relationships ), and what is said about this Hamburger Sailing Ship, can also grievances be obtained of the own ship.

The closer datable by the California Gold Rush of 1848/ 49 in the chorus Shanty could possibly refer to the " Germany ", which was put into service by Hapag 1847. Hapag specialized in emigration transports, so the " Germany " may have been notoriously crowded and hard to keep in good shape (see verses 2 and 3).

While the text of the original American role model describes the journey around Cape Horn, the tune was also used for the song "The camptown ladies" with the same remaining chorus. It is about the women who lived for amusement of the men in the gold rush tent cities.
