Hamilton is a town in Ravalli County in the U.S. state of Montana and the county seat of administration ( County Seat).

The town was founded in the late 19th century by the entrepreneur Marcus Daly, the processed here wood from the surrounding area for the operation of its copper mines.

According to the census in 2000, Hamilton has 3705 inhabitants.

Demography

The population was spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24 years, 24.0% 25-44 years, 20.6% from 45 to 64 years and 28.3 % of 65 years or older. The median age was 44 years.

The median household income was $ 22,013, the median family income $ 30,665. The per capita income in Hamilton was $ 14,689. Under the poverty line lived 17.8 % of the population.

Geography

Hamilton is located in western Montana's Bitterroot Valley. The nearest large city Missoula with more than 50,000 inhabitants is located about 70 km north ( upstream ).
