Hamma is a district of the rural community of herring / helmets in the Thuringian district of Nordhausen.

Geographical location

Hamma is located nearly 11 km southeast of the county town of Nordhausen. History

The town's name derives probably from Old High German hamma, which carries the meaning " angle ", " winkelfömiges area of rivers " or " bay " in toponyms.

The first mention was made in the year 1143.

During the war of liberation against the French in 1813, many people lost Hamma their belongings, as Russian troops encamped between Hamma and Auleben. 1917 a violent storm damaged numerous buildings, but also many fires in the time directed to serious damage.
