Hammersmith Apollo

The Hammersmith Apollo is a concert and entertainment venue in the London Borough of Hammersmith, at the address Queen Caroline Street London, W6 9QH. The hall offers 5039 standing places and 3632 seats. The architect of the Art Deco building was Robert Cromie.

History

The building was opened on 28 March 1932, used under the name " Gaumont Palace " as a cinema. 1946, the words " Palace " has been deleted. In 1962 the hall was named " Hammersmith Odeon " ( in the vernacular as " Hammy -O "), and under which they became known worldwide.

After a renovation in the early 1990s the hall was part of a sponsorship agreement with the Canadian brewer Labatt the name " Labatt 's Apollo ". During this period, the four-manual Compton cinema organ was removed and stored from 1932.

From 2000 to 2002, the hall was called " London Apollo". In 2002, the British brewery Carling took over the contract and the name was accordingly changed to " HMV Hammersmith Apollo ." Since 2006, the Hall was first performed again as " Hammersmith Apollo". In 2006 it was decided, on the initiative of Hammersmith & Fulham Council and the Cinema Theatre Association to restore the organ dismantled and back to operation. A year later the hall was taken over by the MAMA Group. Early 2009, the HMV Group established a joint venture with MAMA. The hall was now called " HMV Hammersmith Apollo ." The event building was sold by HMV Group in May 2012 to AEG Live and CTS Eventim. 2013 it was closed and completely renovated. The reconstruction measures were carried out by architect Foster Wilson. On September 7, 2013, the hall was reopened as Eventim Apollo with a concert by Selena Gomez.

Use as a concert hall

Not least because of the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith the Heavy metal band Motörhead, the hall became world famous as the location of rock concerts. However, the title was only an allusion to the reputation of the Hammersmith Apollo as a legendary concert hall, the recordings for the album originated largely in Leeds and Newcastle during the "Short, Sharp Pain in the Neck " tour in 1981.

Among the artists who appeared at the Hammersmith Apollo, include Status Quo, Genesis, The Who, Queen, AC / DC, Dire Straits, Iron Maiden, Frehley 's Comet, Slipknot, Scorpions, Black Sabbath, Metallica, The Cult, The Cure, Bruce Springsteen, Crowded House, Joe Bonamassa and Whitesnake. Special kind of fame Odeon by David Bowie's final performance as Ziggy Stardust on July 3, 1973. Too, the appearance of Neil Young at the Hammersmith Odeon in the same year it was announced because he sat during the concert part of the stage on fire.
