Formation

It was originally conceived as a successor of Günther Niethammer Handbook of German ornithology, which was published in three volumes in 1937, 1938 and 1942. Work on it began in 1958 by Kurt M. Bauer. In 1962, Urs N. Glutz Blotzheim by Erwin Stresemann and Bauer was asked to participate in the revamp. Glutz of Blotzheim told this, but it was on the new title Manual of the birds of central Europe, on a opposite to the ideas Niethammer strong concept and expanded on an involvement of external technical expert. The result is appearing with from 1966, a total of 14 -volume HBV something completely new and independent, this. Especially by the illustrations of the involved animal painters such as Jörg Kühn, Winfried D. Daunicht and most formative way Friedhelm Weick Some volumes had to be divided on the basis of their circumference, so that the HBV consists of 22 individual volumes plus index volume. The complete manual is also available as a PDF on CD - ROM.

The manual is still the standard work of Central European ornithology.
