Handnesøya

Handnesøya is a Norwegian island in the municipality of Nesna in Nordland. The island at the mouth of Sjona fjord is named after the farm Handnes. It is believed that the original name to the term hand, the points to the shape of the mountain ranges. The highest point is Stokkatinden with almost 600 meters of the country. At the 34.4 km wide island is home to about 120 inhabitants ( 2001). The development is concentrated along the coastal road to the southeast and west. The residents kapell is a small wooden chapel available, which includes 70 seats and dates back to 1969 with the Handnesøya. By Ferry from Nesna, the main town of the municipality of Nesna, the island is connected to the mainland.
