Hani Azer

Hany Azer (* November 11, 1949 in Cairo ) is a German engineer of Egyptian origin.

From 1 April 2008 to 31 May 2011, he held the overall management of the project Stuttgart 21 and Wendlingen -Ulm. Previously, he held this position at the Deutsche Bahn subsidiary DB ProjektBau GmbH, Regional Division East, held. He became known as a project of Berlin Hauptbahnhof. In his role as project Stuttgart 21, he reported directly to the Executive Board of Deutsche Bahn AG.

Azer is currently an employee of the Executive Board of Deutsche Bahn technology for large-scale projects in Germany and Qatar (May 2013).

Career

Azer is one of five siblings. His father was involved in the construction of the railway from Cairo to Aswan. The son of a railway engineer moved in 1973 ( another source: 1974 ) from Egypt to Germany. He initially studied medicine, joined to a study of civil engineering in Bochum and took his degree in 1979. In the same year he was first involved in the construction of a tunnel.

He worked as a supervisor at various subway and bridge projects in the Ruhr. He was branch manager of the Bochum branch of Bilfinger Berger 1989.

In 1994, he joined the " Project Company for traffic installations in the Central area" ( PVZB ) as Project leader for tunneling and a shield tunneling; later he took over the overall responsibility for the north-south tunnel. On 1 May 2001, he took over the Bauverantwortung for the Berlin Central Station. In 2003, he became a technical project manager ( CEO) appointed. Under his leadership, the building was opened in time for the soccer World Cup 2006 to May 28, 2006. At the construction site, he suffered a heart attack. Originally, the construction of the station began in 1995, in 2000 was to be opened. Later, he directed the construction of the rail link with the Berlin Brandenburg Airport as well as the S- Bahn train connections of the Berlin main railway station in the north ( " S21 ").

Azer was appointed by Hartmut Mehdorn end of February 2008, with effect from 1 April 2008, surprising the overall project manager for the rail project Stuttgart -Ulm. He replaced in this role Peter Marquart. Azer began before he took office with the establishment of an implementation group. Critics accused him again and again before lack of communication.

The management of the Stuttgart 21 project, he gave up on his own request as of May 31, 2011. After DB data Azer was increasingly exposed to personal hostility and threats. The work would have been possible since August 2010, only under personal protection. Most recently, he had to give up his Stuttgart commuters Apartment for security reasons. Even Stuttgart -21 opponents had threatened his family.

By his own account he was from personal and professional reasons, resigned as of this function as a result of tight public sentiment in connection with the project, but not because of cost increases and other risks of the project. There have, however, been lacking to him of appreciation for his work for the Stuttgart 21. 2010 and 2011, he had received numerous abusive and threatening letters. He would continue to work for the German railway, first in Berlin. He was succeeded in June 2011 Stefan Penn. In his time as a project the number of employees by half a dozen rose to more than 100.

He is (as of May 2012) the Chief Technology Officer of Deutsche Bahn AG has and where he is responsible for major projects in Germany and Qatar. It should be part of a working group initiated by Hartmut Mehdorn for quick completion of the airport Berlin Brandenburg. According to a media report, however, the German railway hired him for initially not free. The German railway had Azer released in mid-2013.

Azer is married and has two children.

Awards

When choosing the "Berlin of the Year" by the Berliner Morgenpost he reached the 13th place in 2005. On 1 October 2006 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Berlin. For his work on the Humboldt harbor bridge at Berlin Hauptbahnhof he received on 10 March 2008, along with other stakeholders, the German Bridge Award 2008 in the category of road and railway bridges.
