Hanina Segan ha-Kohanim

Hanina (also: Hananiah; Hebrew חנינא סגן הכהנים ) was a Jewish scholar of the ancient world and was among the Tannaim of the first generation ( contemporaries of Hillel ).

He was head of the priesthood, deputy high priest ( Segan ha - Kohanim ) and was also so in the aftermath of 70 ( destruction of the second temple ). He was martyred on the 25th of Sivan.

According to Avot III, 2 he said: "Pray for the welfare of the government, because if not the fear of it, so one would devour the other alive ."
