Hannibal Lokumbe

Hannibal Marvin Peterson ( born November 11, 1948 in Smithville, Texas as Marvin Peterson ), currently ( formerly Hannibal Lokumbe ) mostly called Hannibal, is an American jazz musician (trumpet, koto, composition).

Life and work

Peterson grew up on a farm and received first by his mother ( an organist ) his musical education. he deepened in high school. He first played drums and had occurred since 1961 with its own group, the Soul Masters, which was 1965-1967 (also with T -Bone Walker) on tour. He studied 1967-1969 at North Texas State University and then moved to New York City. He played with Frank Foster, Eric Kloss, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Archie Shepp, Clifford Brown, Sam Rivers and Gil Evans on his album Svengali. 1973 led Peterson as part of the Newport Jazz Festival the first part of his suite "Children of the Fire " on. In 1974 he played after his performance with the band by Gil Evans at the Montreux Jazz Festival on New Jazz Meeting Baden -Baden. In the following years he was with his own Sunrise Orchestra again all of Europe, but was also with George Adams and John Scofield on tour. He led by a gospel choir on the suite " The Angels of Atlanta ," which he dedicated to the victims of a mass murderer. He also participated in productions of Don Pullen, Kip Hanrahan, Andrew Cyrille, Billy Hart, Bardo Henning, John Barthelme and Richard Davis ' New York Unit. 1992/93 he composed for the Kronos Quartet. In 1995, he led a very successful on his ambitious Third Stream Oratorio "African Portraits " with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Daniel Barenboim. Peterson is known as an instrumentalist, especially for his powerful trumpet playing with brilliant high grade technology that reflects the entire history of jazz. The singer Pat Peterson is his sister.
