Hanns Schwarz

Hanns Schwarz, actually Ignatz Black ( born February 11, 1888 in Vienna, † October 27, 1945 in Hollywood, California ) was a German film director of Austrian origin.

Life

Hanns Schwarz attended the Art Academy in Vienna. He then studied interior architecture and painting in Dusseldorf and Paris. Study tours have taken him to Egypt, England and other European countries. The mission is to create a cultural film for the Bulgarian government, brought him into contact with the film.

He came to Berlin in 1923 and turned - from 1925 exclusively in Ufa - in the last years of the silent film era some entertainment films, from which in 1929 created the wonderful lie of Nina Petrovna with Brigitte Helm in the lead role stands out. With the beginning of the sound film in Germany, he is one of the first to devote himself to music and operetta film. He created the successful films Melody of the Heart (1929 ), favorite of the gods (1930 ), Burglar (1930) and bombs on Monte Carlo ( 1931).

1933 emigrated Black because of his Jewish origin from Germany. In England, he turned in the same year with the only 19 -year-old Ida Lupino Prince of Arcadia, the English version of Karl Hartl's The Prince of Arcadia, before he sought in 1934 his future in the United States. There he worked as a screenwriter under the name of Howard Shelton, but he did not get directed orders. His last film, Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel, he staged in London.

Hanns Schwarz was married from 1920 to 1922 with the actress Lissi Arna.
