Hans-Arwed Weidenmüller

Hans- Arwed Weidenmüller ( born July 26, 1933, Dresden ) is a German theoretical physicist who is primarily concerned with nuclear physics.

Life and work

Weidenmüller studied in Bonn and from 1956 to 1957 in Heidelberg with J. Hans D. Jensen, in which he talks about stripping reactions doctorate (Journal of Physics Bd.150, 1958, 389), in which the core projectile nucleons in the target nucleus loses. He was from 1963 Professor of Theoretical Physics in Heidelberg. From 1968 he also worked at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics, from 1972 until his retirement in 2001 as a director.

Weidenmüller is mainly known for his work in the theory of nuclear reactions. He studied nuclear reactions in the shell model with the inclusion of continuum states and developed a microscopic statistical theory of nuclear reactions, which had as transport theory applications to the interpretation of collision experiments with heavy ions as well as on highly excited compound nuclei. He also investigated chaotic dynamics in atomic nuclei and nuclear reactions (as well as Bose -Einstein condensates ) using the method of random matrices.

Awards and prizes

Weidenmüller an honorary doctorate from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot in Israel ( 1991) and member of the Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina ( since 1997) and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences.
