Hans Bobek

Hans Bobek ( born May 17, 1903 in Klagenfurt, † 15 February 1990 in Vienna ) was an Austrian geographer.

Life and work

After studying geography and a doctorate at the University of Innsbruck Bobek was among other things a professor at the geographical institutes of the Universities of Vienna and Freiburg. It significantly shaped the social geography in German-speaking - which had a large content close to Cultural Geography ( cultural geography ) Anglo- American-style - and became known for his work with the Islamic world international recognition. In the time of World War II, he worked in the military geographical department of the army high command.

He developed a hierarchically arranged presentation of basic types geographically relevant companies ( Culture stage theory ). The basic types ranging from settlements as social units on countries to rich culture. Bobek linked social and economic aspects in the analysis of settlement patterns.

Hans Bobek was honorary president of the Austrian Geographical Society. In honor of his contributions to society the Hans Bobek Prize awarded annually since 1991 for outstanding dissertation or habilitation theses. In addition, Bobek was a member of the Austrian and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. 1978 gave the Ruhr- University Bochum him an honorary doctorate.
