Hans Henric von Essen

Hans Henrik von Essen ( * September 26, 1755 at mansion Kavlås, community Tidaholm, † June 28, 1824 in Uddevalla ) was a Swedish Reich Marshal and statesman.

Food came from an old Livonian family, was educated in Uppsala and in Göttingen, and then stepped in Swedish military service.

Food accompanied King Gustav III. on his trips to Italy, France and Germany, and followed him in 1788 at the start of the war against Russia to Finland. For brought about by him evacuation of Gothenburg, he was appointed colonel and commander of the guard. Food was on the side of the king, when he was mortally wounded on 16 March 1792 in Stockholm at a masked ball.

Among the successive governments food also enjoyed high reputation and served 1795-1797 as supreme governor of Stockholm. In 1800 he became Governor-General of Swedish Pomerania. In this role, he defended Stralsund in 1807 against the French until after a successful failure he could negotiate the armistice of Schlatkow with Marshal Mortier in April of this year. Moreover, he came into conflict with King Gustav IV, whereupon food resigned and retired to his estates. Only when the king was dethroned in 1809, food arrived in the Imperial Council and was raised again on 29 April 1809 in the rank of count.

In 1810 he was appointed Reich Marshal, and 1811 he was also still imperial field marshal. On behalf of Charles XIII. Food went as ambassador of Sweden to Paris to make peace with France, by the Swedes came again into the possession of Pomerania.

1813 received food under Charles XIV, the Crown Prince of Sweden, the command of the troops which came against Norway. After the union of the two kingdoms was eating Reich governor of Norway and Norwegian Field Marshal. From this post he was indeed released in 1816, but in 1817 was appointed General Commander in Skåne.

On October 29, 1802, he married Hedvig Eleonora Charlotta of Krassow who died in Stockholm in 1855. By this marriage he acquired the estate Falk Hagen at Reinberg, which belonged until 1945 to the family of food.
