Hans-Jörg Sumi

Hansjörg Sumi ( born January 19, 1959 in Saanen ) is a retired Swiss ski jumper.

Career

The launching of the Ski Club Gstaad Sumi took the Four Hills Tournament 1976/77 for the first time in part at an international show jumping. However, he could neither 1976/77 nor 1977/78 achieve success in the Four Hills Tournament. Only at the Four Hills Tournament 1978/79 it reached in all four competitions finishing in the top ten and ended the tour at the end of a second in the overall standings.

On 27 December 1979 Sumi started for the first time in Cortina d' Ampezzo in the newly created World Cup Ski Jumping. He missed the podium in his first jump only slightly and jumped to 4th place. In Innsbruck he could reach the second place for the first time a podium finish at a World Cup competition.

At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid Sumi reached the 9th Place and in the large hill the 7th place on the normal hill.

In the first World Cup competition after the games he reached in St. Moritz with 4th place again a place just behind the podium. On February 29, 1980, he won in Gstaad his first and only World Cup competition on his home hill. Also in Engelberg he again reached the podium with 3rd place. After he was also fourth in Falun, Sweden, he finished the World Cup season 1979/80 on the 8th place in the overall standings.

In the following years, Sumi could not achieve consistent performance. In the Four Hills Tournament 1980/81 he just jumped on rear seats and remained so successful and no points. In the first event after the tour, which also was the last for Sumi in the season, he scored in Ironwood with 14th place in the ski flying event at the Copper Peak ski jump two more World Cup points to him in the World Cup overall standings at the end of a brought 62nd.

The World Cup season 1981/82 started for Sumi with good results, but he stayed at the Four Hills Tournament once again without success. On January 27, 1982, he was again able to jump with 3rd place on the podium in St. Moritz. When shortly thereafter held in Oslo Nordic World Ski Championships 1982 Sumi reached on the normal hill and 30th in the large hill 49th.

In the following season 1982/83 he reached after a moderately changing season earnings end up with 46 World Cup points of the 22 place in the overall World Cup standings. In his last World Cup season 1983/84 he was able to achieve in Garmisch -Partenkirchen again a 2nd place and jumped in Cortina d' Ampezzo on the 4th Place. Jumping in Cortina d' Ampezzo was also his last World Cup competition. In the overall standings with 32 points, he reached again the 32nd place.

Its active ski jumping career ended Sumi with participation in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. On the large hill he reached it the 22th place and on the normal hill 32nd.
