Hans Kotter

Hans Kotter (* 1480 in Strasbourg, † 1541 in Bern ), and John Kotter, was a German composer and organist of the Renaissance.

Kotter studied with Paul Hofhaimer in the period from 1498 to 1,500. Afterwards he was to 1508 organist at the Saxon court in Torgau. He then took places in the Breisgau and in Fribourg ( Switzerland ), from where he was, however, deported to detention and torture because of his Protestant faith. From 1534 he taught as a schoolmaster in Bern. His organ book he compiled 1513-1522, contains the first German organ dances and pieces of Hofhaimer, Josquin Desprez, Heinrich Isaac, and others. Also preserved are ten preludes, which are held in a somewhat impersonal style and his teacher Hofhaimer closely related.
