Hans Kundrat

Johann Kundrat ( born October 6, 1845 in Vienna, † April 25, 1893 ) was an Austrian pathologist.

Life

Kundrat studied at the University of Vienna and made here in 1868 his doctorate. After he was already in his student days demonstrator at the anatomist Joseph Hyrtl, made him Carl von Rokitansky to his assistant. 1873 Kundrat habilitation Pathological Anatomy, 1875, he became an associate professor. In 1877 he taught in Graz pathology in 1882 before he took over the chair of the Vienna Pathological Anatomy. 1887/88 he was dean. In 1893, he became privy councilor. After his death Kundrat was buried in the Viennese central cemetery, his grave monument was designed by the sculptor Theodor Charlemont. 1897 Kundratstrasse was named in Vienna by the pathologist.

Importance

Johann Kundrat was a significant pathologist of Vienna School of Medicine. In the follow- Rokitansky he correlated morphological changes at autopsy with the clinical symptoms of the patients. 1893, shortly before his death, he described the clinical picture of Lymphosarkomatose that bears his name in medical nomenclature.

Kundrat next was also an outstanding teacher. He founded the Institute of Pathology, a museum to its design, he lent his hand. Kundrat was co-founder and editor of the 1888 Vienna clinical Wochenschrift.
