Hans -Peter Gies ( born May 9, 1947 in Berlin ) is a former German track and field athlete and Olympian, who competed for East Germany.

Hans -Peter Gies was in 1969, 1972 and 1976 East German champion in the shot put. During these three years he was also in each case at the season climax. In the 1972 Olympics he finished fourth with 21.14 meters and was thus just four inches behind the Olympic champion Wladyslaw Komar from Poland, the bronze medal he missed with the same width with Hartmut Briesenick (DDR ) because of the smaller size of its second- best effort. 1976 Gies was Olympia fifth with 20.47 m again.

1969 Gies had collided with 20,64 m European record. His best jump of 21.31 meters, he met in 1972.

Hans -Peter Gies was a member of the SC Dynamo Berlin. At a height of 1.94 m his competition weight was 105 kg. Gies ' left leg was 5 cm shorter than the right, so he had to use special deposits. Gies used the support push-through technique and was considered one of the best engineers of his time. His best performance in the bench press was by his own admission 235 kg despite a long lever.
