Haplochromine

Astatotilapia burtoni

The Haplochromini ( Syn: Haplochrominae Hoedeman, 1947 Pseudocrenilabrini Fowler, 1935) are a tribe of cichlids ( Cichlidae ). Almost all species come from Africa, with a focus on East Africa. Astatotilapia flaviijosephi lives in Southwest Asia in the Jordan River and its tributaries. The Haplochromini in Lake Malawi and the Furu in Lake Victoria have formed a large number of endemic species in these lakes and provide a large part of the fish fauna.

Phylogeny

The following cladogram by Genner et al. and Salzburger et al. shows the possible relationship and evolution of Haplochromini. Area of origin is probably the Lake Tanganyika, from where they spread out over the rivers in the Congo and southern Africa, the Malagarasi eastward and into Lake Victoria and Lake Malawi. In the two lakes then a rapid adaptive radiation took place again, incurred in the several hundred species.

It also shows that the Haplochromini are paraphyletic with respect to the Tropheini from Lake Tanganyika, which are deep within the Haplochromini.
