Happisburgh

Happisburgh ( [ heɪzbrə ] ) is a village in the English county of Norfolk. Here, the oldest previously known from Europe fossil footprints from early relatives of anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens) have been discovered.

The local area is 10.78 km ². In the 2001 census, even before the founding of the town of Walcott, the population was 1372nd

Attractions

St. Mary's Church

The tower of St. Mary 's Church from the 15th century is an important clue to warn the sailors from the nearby sandy banks. 1940 was a German bomber on his return flight a previously trapped bomb from whose shrapnel are still visible in the columns of the side wing of the church. The octagonal baptistery, also from the 15th century is provided with carved lions and satyrs.

Lighthouse

The red and white striped lighthouse, located a half mile south of the church, is the only independently operating lighthouse in the UK. He is also the oldest continuous working lighthouse, it was built in 1790, in East Anglia.

Coastal erosion

The village is affected by coastal erosion, which several houses already have collapsed. 1959 Abwehrbauten were drawn up to stop the water from the sea.

Prehistoric site

On 7 February 2014, the city fell into the limelight when it was announced that footprints were in May 2013 near Happisburgh been discovered by hominins that are about 800,000 years old, long before the time at which Homo sapiens appeared in Europe originated. It is believed that the footprints of Homo antecessor come. It is the oldest footprints of hominins, were previously found outside Africa.

The traces had survived hidden under sand, but had been uncovered in 2013 by a storm surge. Happened shortly after the research team led by Chris Stringer nearby and became aware of the footprints. A few weeks later, the tracks have been removed from the flood.
