Harald Beyer (literary historian)

Harald Beyer (* November 15, 1891 in Bergen, † July 26, 1960 ) was a Norwegian literary historian, professor in Bergen and editor of Norsk litteraturhistorie, a six-volume standard work on Norwegian literary history.

Biography

Beyer was the son of the bookseller Freydar dekke Høegh von Krogh Beyer (1864-1933) and his German wife Flora Charlotte Müller ( 1862-1912 ). He attended the Cathedral School mountains and studied history of language in Christiania. In 1924, he earned a doctorate with a thesis about Søren Kierkegaard and then became a high school teacher in Haugesund and Bergen. In parallel, he wrote book reviews for the newspaper Bergens Tidende and said literary programs for the Norwegian Broadcasting. 1930/31 he worked for a year in Hamburg as a university teacher.

1951 Beyer was appointed Professor of European Literature at the University of Bergen was founded a few years earlier. He was also a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences, chairman of the theater Den Nationale Scene and member of the Council for Norwegian language.

Beyer was married to Eidis Johannessen since 1919. His son Edvard was also an important literary historian.
