Haraldur Sigurdsson

Haraldur Sigurðsson ( born May 31, 1939 in Stykkishólmur ) is an Icelandic volcanologist and geochemist.

Life

Haraldur Sigurðsson studied geology and geochemistry in the UK, where she earned a Bachelor of Queen's University of Belfast and received his doctorate in 1970 at the University of Durham. He worked until 1974 on investigations and research jobs to the volcanoes of the Caribbean. Then he was appointed professor at the Oceanographic Institute of the University of Rhode Iceland.

Research priorities

Particularly well known Haraldur Sigurðsson was by researching major volcanic eruptions of the past such as of Vesuvius of 79 AD in connection with the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum cities.

In 1991, he discovered traces of a large meteorite impact in Haiti and could prove that they were from the time of the extinction of the dinosaurs.

In 2004 he discovered the city of Mount Tambora in Indonesia, which had been buried in 1815 during a huge explosive eruption of Mount Tambora volcano ash under ..

Published in 1999 Haraldur Sigurdsson an overview of the history of volcanology.

He is also editor in chief of the Encyclopedia of Volcanoes.
