Harry Reser

Harry Reser ( born January 17, 1896 in Ohio; † September 27, 1965 in San Francisco) was an American jazz banjo player and bandleader in the field of early jazz and dance music as well as author.

Life and work

Harry Reser began his musical career in dance bands in his home state of Ohio and the Midwest. In 1920 he moved to Buffalo ( New York) and then to New York City, where he worked as a session musician in 1921. Reser took on a series of solo banjo records, which showed that his instrument was a rhythm instrument alone. In 1925 he got the opportunity, Director and Head of Clicquot Club Eskimo Orchestra to be, who worked for the radio end of NBC. This weekly show was sponsored by Clicquot Club Ginger Ale and made Reser soon known nationwide. In July 1925, he had with " Yearning ( Just for You ) " his first hit in the charts, followed by " Someone Is Losin ' Susan ", " Imagination" and " Piccolo Pete "; his last title success in 1933 was the hit " You're Gonna Lose Your Gal " with Jimmy Brierly as a singer. His band included, inter alia, the jazz musician George Van Eps and to Jerry Jerome. 1933-35 he played with Jimmy McPartland. In the 1920s and 1930s, he led various ensembles under different pseudonyms for recordings, including for the Brunswick label, Columbia, Edison, Gennett, Okeh, Paramount, Victor and Vocalion.

He later worked mostly in television studio orchestras in Broadway orchestras and wrote several textbooks for banjo, guitar and ukulele. He died in 1965 of a heart attack at an orchestra rehearsal in front of the Broadway production of " Fiddler on the Roof".
