Hartelkering

The Hartel Storm surge barrier in the Hartel Canal in Spijkenisse is the same as the Maeslant storm surge barrier is a part of flood protection for the Port of Rotterdam, and part of the Delta Plan. Both weirs were built in the period 1991-1997. The channel weir via the computer system BOS (German decision and support system) controlled, which means that both weirs are closed simultaneously.

The Hartelwehr consists of two elliptical lift gates with a width of 49.3 m and 98.0 m, which are suspended vertically movable between three towers. The towers stand on the pillars of the Hartelbrücke. The dam height is in the closed position three meters above NAP. If once water flows over the weirs, which is not dangerous to the hinterland, higher weirs on the other hand would lead to flooding of the Europoort and the dikes on the Brielse Maas. The Hartelwehr is checked once a year together with the Maeslantwehr.

On the night of November 9, 2007, the weir was first closed due to an impending storm tide as the storm moved Tilo over central and northern Europe. Simultaneously, the Maeslant storm surge barrier was closed.
