Harter Fell (Mardale)

The Harter Fell is a 778 m high mountain in the east of the Lake District in England, Cumbria. The summit lies at the meeting point of three mountain ridges, and the mountain is at the end of three valleys: Mardale, Longsleddale and Kentmere. There is also a Harter Fell between the Eskdale Valley and the Duddon Valley in the west of the Lake District.

Topography

The summit plateau forms a horseshoe with an opening in a southeasterly direction. The plateau is covered with grass and narrow. At each end of the horseshoe there is a secondary summit.

The southern ridge leads on The Knowe and Brown Howe to Kentmere Pike. The eastern ridge leads over Little Harter Fell and Adam Seat down to Gatescarth pass where it goes up to the Branstree again.

A third lower ridge leads to the center of the horseshoe leads down to the Nan Bield Pass and closes there at the Mardale Ill Bell and High Street.

South below the Harter Fell stems from the River Sprint and the Kentmere Reservoir is located on its western flank. In the north of the mountain of the Small Water Lake lies.

Rise

The mountain passes of Nan Bield and Gatescarth were a traditional trade route connecting the Mardale valley of Kentmere and Longsleddale. The construction of the Haweswater reservoir accounted for the original character of this compound, but now offers an easy way to Harter Fell with a road connection to the end of Haweswater Reservoir. About the passports but also an ascent from Kentmere or Longsleddale is possible.

On a hike through Kentmere Pike to Harter Fell is a continuation of the way across Mardale Ill Bell itself forms the so-called Kentmere Horseshoe (English Kentmere Horseshoe ). A combination of Harter Fell with Branstree, Mardale Ill Bell and High Street runs high in an arc around the Mardale valley.

An ascent is directly from Longsleddale valley over the former Wrengill Quarry Quarry possible.

The Summit

The summit offers a good panoramic view that includes the entire Haweswater reservoir among others. At the top you find two stone hill.
