Hartford is a village on the east bank of the Mississippi River in Madison County in the western part of the U.S. state of Illinois. The city is located in the Metro - East called the eastern part of the metropolitan area of Greater St. Louis the city of St. Louis in neighboring Missouri. In 2000, Hartford had 1,545 inhabitants.

Geography

History
The participants of the Lewis and Clark expedition spent the winter 1803/1804 near the present-day village of Hartford, before the expedition started.
