Harun Farocki

Harun Farocki ( born January 9, 1944 in Neutitschein, German Empire, now Czech Republic ) is a filmmaker, author and university lecturer in film. He is one of the important essay filmmakers and has more than 90 films realized.

Life

Harun Farocki studied from 1966 to 1968 in the first year of the German Film and Television Academy Berlin ( dffb). From 1974 to 1984 he was editor of film criticism.

Together with Hanns Hisser 1976 he staged Heiner Müller's pieces The Battle and tractor in the Theater Basel. In the years 1993 to 1999 he was a lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley ( California), since 2000 at the dffb and the University of the Arts Berlin. Since 2004 he teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

In the 2000s, Harun Farocki has created a series of artworks that are shown in the exhibition and museum context, including installations on prisons or even shopping malls. In 2006 he curated together with his wife Antje Ehmann in Vienna, the exhibition cinema like never before, which was shown in Berlin in 2007.

At the Documenta 12 (Kassel 2007) Harun Farocki began with the media installation Deep Play (2007) part.

Farocki is a screenwriter for many feature films by director Christian Petzold.
