Hassan Wirajuda

Nur Hassan Wirajuda ( born July 9, 1948 in Tangerang, Banten ) is an Indonesian diplomat and politician.

Biography

After school he studied law at the University of Indonesia and graduated in 1971 with the graduation from. He then worked after admission as a lawyer. Some time later he entered the diplomatic service. In 1976, he completed a post -graduate studies at Oxford University, which he finished with a Certificate in Diplomacy in 1977. Later he studied at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and acquired there in 1984 a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy ( MALD ). Subsequent studies at the Faculty of Law ( School of Law ) from Harvard University, he finished in 1985 with a Master of Laws ( LL.M.). Finally, a Ph.D. in International Law ( Doctor of Juridical Science in International Law ) from the University of Virginia, he was awarded in 1987.

During his diplomatic career further Wirajuda in 1993 Director for International Organizations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This was followed by use as Ambassador to Egypt and then to July 2000 as Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva between October 1997 and December 1998. After his return to Indonesia, he was then from July 2000 to August 2001 Director General for Political Affairs at the Foreign Ministry.

On 9 August 2001, he was appointed by President Megawati Sukarnoputri as Foreign Minister. This office he retained also in the government of their successors in office Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono since October 2004.

In September 2005, he spoke before the United Nations General Assembly, inter alia, international terrorism, natural disasters such as tsunamis in the region, but also on cooperation in ASEAN.

On February 6, 2009 Wirajuda criticized in his position as Secretary of Myanmar for the treatment of people from the People of the Rohingya. On 22 October 2009 Marty Natalegawa followed him as Foreign Minister.
