Havelock Iceland, Eng. Havelock Iceland is the main island of Ritchie's Archipelago, Andaman in the Bay of Bengal belonging to India. East of the island extends the Andaman Sea. Politically, the island is part of the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is located about 57 km northeast of Port Blair. It is the largest island of Ritchie's Archipelago.

Name

The island was after Henry Havelock, a British Major General, who participated in several campaigns in British India, named. The archipelago was named after the British surveyor John Ritchie, who has measured and documented the region of the Andaman Islands for the East India Company 1770-1785.

Population

The island is mainly inhabited by settlers from Bengal. The inhabitants speak Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Telugu and include the religions Hinduism, Christianity and Islam.

The originally native to the islands of Ritchie's Archipelago indigenous ethnic group of the Great Andamanese has disappeared during the colonization of the islands.
