Hawiye

The Hawiye (sometimes Hawiya written ) are a clan of the Somali. They make up about 25 % of the population of Somalia. Depending on the source, the Hawiye or the Darod be specified as the largest Somali clan.

The Hawiye are located in southern and central Somalia and neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia ( Ogaden ). Sub-clans of the Hawiye include, without limitation:

  • Kaariye Gidir Sixawle Wadeerre ama ( Murusade ).
  • Cayr Sacad Saleebaan Saruur

The Ajuran led in the history of Somalia temporarily a state that stretched from its capital Kalafo in Ogaden over the valley of Shabeelle way to Hobyo.

In 1989, the United Somali Congress ( USC) was formed as a rebel against the Hawiye, Siad Barre's regime. He was instrumental in the overthrow of Barre in 1991, then split, however, between Habar Gidir and Abgal. In the civil war in Somalia since 1991, the capital of Mogadishu was controlled by various Hawiye clan leaders and warlords, with particular Abgal and Habar Gidir fought for power. Currently ( since 2006) combat parts of the Hawiye clan, the transitional government of Somalia, because they feel inadequately represented in this.

Known Hawiye were or are, inter alia, the current President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the former President Aden Abdullah Osman Daar, the warlord Mohammed Farah Aidid, Hussein Mohammed Farah and Ali Mahdi Muhammad, former interim president Abdikassim Salad Hassan, the Transitional Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Ghedi and Nur Hassan Hussein and the Hip- hop artist K'naan.
