Hayden Thompson

Hayden Thompson ( born March 5, 1938 in Booneville, Mississippi) is an American rockabilly and country musician. Thompson is one of many musicians who emerged at Sun Records.

Life

Childhood and youth

Hayden Thompson was born in 1938 in Mississippi. After his brother had died young, Thompson was the only child of his parents, Baxter and Thelma. At five years old he got his first guitar, which he knew how to play it again, and was influenced by the country stars of the time such as Hank Snow and the Delmore Brothers. In addition, Thompson Blues heard of artists like Howlin 'Wolf and BB King. Already as a teenager he started performing on the radio and on talent competitions.

Career

At age 16, Thompson founded in high school his first band, the Southern Melody Boys. The group consisted of Cricket Grissom, whose sister Marlin ( bass), Clyde Hill ( guitar), Perry King ( steel guitar ) and Junior Johnson (fiddle ) and played mainly cover versions of current country hits. Quick local label was from Records attention to the group and released the first single from the band in 1954. Though I Feel The Blues Coming On / Act Like You Love Me sold well, it was the only drive in the group.

Thompson split from the Southern Melody Boys in 1956 and got a recording contract from Sam Phillips in Memphis, Tennessee, the owner of Sun Records. Even before Thompson was often present at the Union Avenue in Phillips small studio and was even lead singer of Slim Rhodes ' band. Sam Phillips said then end of the year ready to take Thompson as a solo musician. Along with Billy Lee Riley's band and the young Jerry Lee Lewis, he recorded a version of Little Junior Parker Love My Baby and One Broken Heart. Both titles were not published until almost a year later, when Phillips founded his new label Phillips International in November 1957. However, Bill Justis ' Raunchy song became a hit, making Thompson quickly disappeared from the scene. Thompson remained for some time in Memphis and took on more titles, but they were all not be published. Nevertheless, he participated in several tours with other Sun artists such as Billy Lee Riley and Sonny Burgess.

Thompson moved to Chicago in 1958, where he continues recorded singles for Kapp Records and also grossed an album. One of his biggest fans at this time was a young singer named Waylon Jennings. Thompsons plates were never hits, but allowed him a guest appearance on the Grand Ole Opry. Since Thompson but now had a wife and children, he retired from the music business and worked as a chauffeur.

In the 1980s, his songs as part of the rockabilly revival in Europe have become classics among rockabilly fans and Thompson began his first tour of England. Since then he has recorded a number of albums and is still a regular guest at international rockabilly festival.
