Hazel Byford, Baroness Byford

Hazel Osborne Byford, Baroness Byford DBE ( born January 14, 1941 in Rothley ) is a British politician ( Conservative Party ).

Life and career

Byford was born as a daughter of Sir Cyril Osborne ( 1898-1969 ). Her father was a politician of the Conservative Party and from 1945 until his death in 1969, member of the House of Commons for the constituency of Louth in Lincolnshire. Byford first attended the Portland House School in London Road in Leicester, and later the private St. Leonard 's School in St Andrews. After her graduation she studied agriculture at the Agricultural College in Northamptonshire Moulton. Later she worked as a poultry breeder; they bred parents for the poultry company Thornbers.

From 1961 to 1976 Byford worked for the Women's Royal Voluntary Service, the last five years of this period as " County Organiser " in Leicestershire. From 1989 to 1994 she was a member of the Transport Users ' Consultative Committee and from 1994 to 1995 at the Rail Users' Consultative Committee.

She had several party offices held: From 1986 to 1993 she was Chair of the East Midlands Women's Conservative Committee, 1989-1990 Vice-Chair from 1990 to 1993 and Chairman ( Chairman ) of the National Committee of Conservative Women. In 1996, she was chairman at the Congress of the Conservative Party ( Conservative Party Conference) in Bournemouth. From 1996 to 1997 she was president of the National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations.

Byford held various other offices and honorary positions. In 2007 she was elected president of the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers; this office she held until June 2010. In 2010 she was President of the Royal Smithfield Club. She was elected to the Livery Company The Worshipful Company of Farmers as "Under Warden " in the council meeting (Court) On 2 March 2010.

She is a member of the cathedral chapter (Canon) of Leicester Cathedral. She is patron ( patron ) of various agricultural organizations: Women Food and Farming Union, National Farm Attractions Network and the Institute of the Agricultural Secretaries and Administrators. She is president of Leicestershire Clubs for Young People and the Organisation Linking Environment and Farming ( LEAF ). She is also President of the St Leonard 's School, St Andrews.

Since 2003 she is an Associate Member ( Fellow ) of the Royal Agricultural Society.

Membership in the House of Lords

Byford was appointed on 15 October 1996 for Life peer as Baroness Byford, of Rothley in the County of Leicestershire and officially launched on 19 November 1996 the House of Lords. Your inaugural speech where she held on 27 November 1996.

Work in the public

In January 2009, she questioned the government's position with regard to excessive payments to agricultural enterprises within the framework of the so-called ' Hill Farm Allowance ' (Highland premium) in a parliamentary question in the House of Lords.

Honors

She was appointed in 1994 to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 2008 she received an honorary degree as Doctor of Science from Nottingham Trent University in recognition of their exceptional services to agriculture. In 2010 she received from the University of Leicester honorary doctorate as a Doctor of Laws.

She married in 1962 Barrie C. Byford. She is the mother of two children, a son (†) and a daughter.
