Hedwig of Holstein

Hellwig of Holstein ( Hedwig von Holstein; * to 1257 in Itzehoe; ? † 1324-1326 ) was from 1276 to 1290 Swedish queen.

Queen

Hellwig of Holstein was the daughter of Count Gerhard I of Itzehoe -Holstein (1232-1290) and his wife Elisabeth of Mecklenburg ( † ca 1280 ) was born.

On November 11, 1276 married Hellwig in Kalmar the Swedish king Magnus I ( 1240-1290 ), who had been a year earlier elected to the Swedish king. The wedding was under a bad sign, since almost burned down the entire city due to a fire at the ceremony.

Hellwig was officially crowned on July 29, 1281 in Söderköping the Swedish queen. It was the first coronation of a royal wife ever in Swedish history.

In Swedish history Hellwig is described as exemplary queen and mother. Politically, their influence was probably low.

Widow

After the death of her husband to Hellwig settled on the estate Dåvö at Munktorp ( Västmanland ), which she had received as a wedding gift to the wedding. Hellwig survived all her sons, who were feuding with each other in internal political disputes. She died on Dåvö between March 1324 and February 1326. Presumably it lies today in the Riddarholmskyrkan buried next to her husband and her daughter Rikissa in Stockholm.

Children

Magnus and Hellwig had six children from her marriage:
