Eric, Duke of Södermanland

Erik Magnusson, Duke of Södermanland, (* 1282, † 1318 ) was the son of Magnus Ladulås and his wife Hedwig von Holstein.

Erik stood out early on by the greater glory than his brother Birger, who should inherit the crown once produced. In this competition he was also a prop in his other brother Waldemar.

In his youth, he became engaged to Ingeborg Håkonsdotter of Norway. But when he asked for the wedding in 1308, King Håkon V., to give him his daughter refused, because he had in the Swedish power struggle support Erik's brother Birger.

Erik later made a pilgrimage to Vienna, and then broke off his engagement with Sofia of Verle ( the niece of Erik Menved ), after which he again became engaged to Ingeborg. This he eventually married in 1312 in Oslo.

For the power struggle between the Dukes and King Birger see Banquet of Nyköping. Erik died in 1318 in the prison of Nyköping.

The Erik Chronicle is a font propaganda emanating from Duke Erik, but actually is by his successors.
