Hegewald (colony)

Hegewald was a German settlement area at the time of National Socialism, which planned to Heinrich Himmler in the environment of its eponymous headquarters Hegewald ( in a forest in today's military airfield Zhytomyr - Oserne located ) was approximately 2 km south of the Ukrainian city Zhytomyr created in late 1942.

The garrison consisted of about 1,000 men Hegewald the SS troops. The construction was led by a decorated in Hegewald branch of the People's Mittelstelle ( VoMi ) under the leadership of SS - Obersturmbannführer Erwin Müller. Located were mainly Wolhyniendeutsche from partisan prone areas (circles Bazaar, Malyn, Ovruch and Jemiltschyne ). The colony was a personal showcase of Heinrich Himmler. In March 1943, the last ethnic Germans from Kiev were located in Hege forest area. Thus, the population of the settlement area peaked with 10,178 people. Around 15,000 Ukrainians were deported from the area Hege forest to make room for the settlement. Hege forest was only one of two built in the environment of Zhytomyr settlement points. To protect against the increasing partisan attacks ordered the special regional instruct for resettlement from the Race and Settlement Main Office ( RuSHA ) of the SS, Theo Henschel, in early 1943 the plant of another settlement colony called Förster city (today Tschernjachiw, north of Zhytomyr located ) to. In this approximately 9,000 people German were settled. On 4 February 1944, the area was occupied by the Red Army to Zhytomyr. Only a short time before was the evacuation of ethnic Germans in detention centers in the Warta country. The settlement base Hege Forest is next to Zamosc as one of the areas in which elements of the General Plan East have been implemented.
