Heino Puuste

Heino Puuste ( born September 7, 1955 in Lagedi, Rae ) is a former Estonian javelin thrower, who started his active time for the Soviet Union. After his playing career, he worked as a trainer and manages inter alia on the Estonian champion Andrus Värnik.

Sporting career

At the age of 19 years Puuste 1975 won the Estonian national championship for the first time. This title he also won in 1979 and 1981. From 1979 to 1986 he was part of the Soviet national team and was continuously finding from 1980 to 1986 among the top ten in the world rankings. In 1979 he won the bronze medal at the Summer Universiade in Bucharest. With a width of 86.10 meters Puuste just missed a medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow in fourth. In 1981, he won his second bronze medal at the Universiade in Edmonton. The European Athletics Championships 1982 in Athens, he won with a distance of 89.56 meters silver medal behind Uwe Hohn. The following year, he again had to settle with fourth place at the World Athletics Championships 1983 in Helsinki. In 1986 he won the silver medal behind Tom Petranoff at the Goodwill Games in Moscow. and was fifth at the European Championships in Stuttgart.

Throughout his career, he improved the Estonian national record ten times. In July 1978, he surpassed with a throw of 84.06 meters, the twelve year-old record by Mart Paama by one centimeter. Throughout his career, he improved the Estonian record up to 94.20 meters. This length he reached on June 5, 1983 at a meeting in Birmingham. That He also improved the Soviet record, which was held until then by Jānis Lūsis and lay at a distance of 93.80 meters. After 1986, the nature of the projectile launcher was changed, all record lists were deleted. On February 23, 1986, Puuste wore with a width of 73.84 meters again in the record lists. During the year, he improved the Estonian record yet to 83.20 meters. This was in 1990 significantly exceeded by Marek Kaleta.

Puuste, who is married to the former basketball player Oksana Kullam since 1997, since 2003, coached the 2005 World Champion and current Estonian record holder Andrus Värnik.
