Heinrich Blochmann

Heinrich ( Ferdinand ) Blochmann ( born January 8, 1838 in Dresden, † July 13, 1878 in Calcutta ) was a German orientalist and university teachers in India.

Life

Bloch man was the son of the printer Ernst Bloch Ehrenfried man and a nephew of Karl Justus Blochmann. After visiting the Kreuzschule Blochmann studied from 1855 Oriental and Persian language at Heinrich Leberecht Fleischer in Leipzig. In 1857 he became a member of the Corps Lusatia Leipzig. He was concerned about the recruitment campaign earned and brought, among others, Richard Andree to the Corps. He fought five duels, one of which PP. In 1857 he continued his studies at the University of Paris continues with Haase. Because of his interest in India in 1858 he went to England and joined the British Army, with which he came as a simple soldier to the place of his scientific interest. Even during the crossing his special language skills were known. Arrived in India, he was assigned to Fort William College with office work and gave Farsi lessons. After a few months, he obtained his discharge from the Army and became an interpreter for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. With the assistance of his newfound friend William Nassau Lees Blochmann was only 22 years Assistant Professor of Arabic and Persian, founded by Warren Hastings in Calcutta Madrasa in 1781, since 2007 Aliah University. In 1861 he acquired in the examination subject Hebrew the MA and LLD from the University of Calcutta in 1857 the newly founded. From 1862 to 1865 he was vice-rector and professor of mathematics at Doveton College, Calcutta, and was appointed in 1865 back to Madras from Calcutta. As followers of William Nassau Lees he was after his death director (principal) of Madrasa in Calcutta and remained until his death in this position. He translated many works from Arabic and from Persian into English and dealt comprehensively with the history of Islam in India.

He was from 1868 philological secretary of the Asiatic Society of Bengal.
