Heinrich Philipp Konrad Henke

Heinrich Philipp Konrad Henke (* July 3, 1752 in Hehlen; † May 2, 1809 in Helmstedt ) was a German Lutheran theologian and scholar.

Life

Heinrich Henke was the son of the pastor of the garrison church of St. Aegidien in Braunschweig, who died already in 1756. After visiting the school in Braunschweig in 1772, he studied at the University of Helmstedt philosophy and Protestant Theology at Johann Benedict Carpzov IV 1776 Henke received his doctorate.

In 1777 he became professor of philosophy in 1780 full professor of theology, especially for churches and history of dogma. In 1786, Henke was appointed abbot of the newly founded monastery Michael Seminary in the near Blankenburg (Harz ). 1800 was followed by the office of the General Superintendent in Schoningen at Helmstedt. 1803 Henke abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Konigslutter, also a reformed seminary. 1804 following the appointment of the Vice- President of the Consistory and Ephorus ( " head of a Seminary ") of the "Collegium Carolinum " in Braunschweig. Shortly before the closure of the University of Helmstedt by Jérôme Bonaparte died Henke.

Henke 1780 married the daughter of his teacher Johann Benedict Carpzov. The marriage was, inter alia, the famous church historian Ernst Ludwig Theodor Henke (1804-1872) produced.

Heinrich Philipp Konrad Henke was a representative of the rationalistic and critical theology. He tried to portray the history of the Church without embellishments and modernize the dogmatic teachings. He was involved in the same direction as Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, who lived in neighboring Wolfenbüttel since 1770, and to 1767 teaching at the University of Helmstedt Wilhelm Abraham Teller. Henkes important pupil of Wilhelm Gesenius and Julius August Ludwig Wegscheider.

He was different, mostly short-lived periodicals: Eusebia ( Helmstedt 1797ff ); Archive for the latest Church History ( Weimar from 1794 to 1799 ); Religious annals (Braunschweig 1800-1802 ), who were all members of the Enlightenment theology.
