Heinrich Wieland Prize

The Heinrich Wieland Prize ( HWP) is named after the German chemist and Nobel laureate Heinrich Otto Wieland ( 1877-1957 ). Since 1964, the Heinrich Wieland Prize chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and clinical medicine of fats and lipids has been awarded annually to innovative scientific work in the fields. The area will be awarded on the HWP today (as of 2013), are biologically active molecules and systems and their clinical significance in chemistry, biochemistry and physiology. The price is internationally one of the most prestigious awards and is (as of 2013) endowed with 50,000 euros.

History

The award was established in 1963 and awarded annually since 1964, including at later Nobel Prize winner. Since 1989 also exists as an award for lifetime achievement, the Heinrich Wieland Gold Medal, which is not awarded every year. In 2000, the margarine Institute ended the donor role for the price, which held the Institute since 1963; Since then, the price was initially sponsored by the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim. Reason is the tight binding of the namesake of the family and the company Boehringer; Heinrich Wieland was a cousin of Helene Boehringer, wife of company founder Albert Boehringer. From 1915 to the 1920s, Heinrich Wieland was also a consultant for Boehringer Ingelheim and during this time the company's first scientific department. Since 2011, the price is doped by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation.
