Helena Dragaš

Dragash Helena ( Елена Драгаш Bulgarian, Serbian Јелена Драгаш / Jelena Dragaš; * to 1372, † May 23 1450 in Constantine Opel ) was Byzantine empress and wife of Manuel II

Helena was the daughter of Constantine Dragaš, despot of the Principality of Welbaschd (now Kyustendil ).

Her father died in 1395 at the Battle of Rovine. Constantine Dragaš was killed as a vassal of the Sultan Bayezid I in the fight against the troops of Mircea I..

Helena married on February 10, 1392 Manuel II They had several children, including:

  • John VIII (1392-1448), Byzantine Emperor 1425-1448
  • Constantine XI. (1405-1453), Byzantine Emperor 1448-1453

Manuel II died on July 21 in 1425. Helena survived him by almost 25 years. She withdrew to a monastery and took the monastic name hypomone ( patience ) to. She died on 23 May 1450 Konstantin Opel.
