The plant genus of the rock rose ( Helianthemum ) belongs to the Zistrosengewächsen ( Cistaceae ). It includes about 175 species that are common in the Mediterranean.

Name

The German common name comes from the property of the flowers, to align with the sun. The bright yellow flowers, or the preference for sunny places may have contributed to it.

The botanical name is derived from the Greek words helios for sun and anthemos for flowering from.

Description

Helianthemum species are evergreen to semi-evergreen, semi- shrubs. The against-constant leaves are simple.

The hermaphroditic, flowers are radial symmetry fünfzählig. The five free petals are most commonly yellow, but there are also species in the colors purple, pink, red, scarlet and white. Most many stamens are present. The ovary is upper constant. Are formed capsule fruits.

Ecology

The flowers close up in the dark and wet, and are open only at temperatures above 20 ° C. You are nektarlos but provide protein-rich pollen. The petals have a strong UV reflection and are therefore visible to bees.

The leaves are colored in winter snow-free locations bright red due to the accumulation of anthocyanins ( dyes) which are formed from the assimilates when the temperatures for the conversion into starch are no longer enough.
