Hendrik de Vries

Hendrik de Vries ( born August 17, 1896 in Groningen, † November 18, 1989 in Haren ) was a Dutch poet and printmaker.

Life

His ancestors were farmers in the province of Groningen, his father Wobbe de Vries (1870-1943) high school teacher ( and Dutch linguist ) in Groningen. He formed mainly self-taught and wanted to become an artist, despite the reluctance of parents. Among other things, because he wanted to take his mother into consideration (which was a manic depressive ), he also took a subordinate position in the municipal archives in Groningen. His first book of poems was published in 1920 ( De night ) and in the 1920s and 1930s he was regarded as one of the leading Dutch poet.

De Vries was by surrealism and Spanish poetry influenced ( he used the copla form of a poem ) and also wrote poetry in Spanish. 1924-1936 he went every year on vacation to Spain, where he was inspired especially dance and music of the Roma and the bullfight. He had an anti- bourgeois attitude. The subconscious played a large role in his poems. Because of his chosen topics and because he was also a visual artist, he has also been compared to Alfred Kubin. In his painting, he was (initially expressionist paintings of farms and landscapes in darker colors than most other De Ploeg artists) by Kubin and Francisco de Goya and their dream fantasies influenced ( Magic Realism ).

After the death of his parents he married in 1946, the four years younger Riek van der Zee and moved to Haren. At the same time he went in 1947 when municipal archives in Groningen early retirement. He published an art critic and poet in various newspapers and also tried to sell his paintings. Within the group De Ploeg Although he took part in exhibitions regularly, but was considered a loner and stepped out of 1972.

De Vries published poems in the literary magazine founded in 1916 Het Getij, forum, De Gids and other magazines. One of his poems ( Een tuin schatrijke, a rich garden ) is one of the poems attached to walls in Leiden.

He was in 1946 the first prize winner of his honor so-called Hendrik de Vries price of Groningen for writers and since 1986 there is the Hendrik de Vries scholarship. In 1962 he was awarded for his oeuvre Constantin Huygens Price, 1959 Culture Prize of the province of Groningen, and in 1973 the PC Hooft prize.

He also drew and painted and was a member of the artist group De Ploeg.

A bust of Norman Burkett is just around the Martinikerk (Groningen ), near which was the city archives, in which he worked.
