Hendrik van den Bergh (count)

Heinrich Graf of the Bergh (* 1573 in Bremen, † May 22, 1638 ), Margrave of Bergen op Zoom and Mr. Stevens Weerd, was a Spanish general.

Life

Henry, the seventh son of Count William IV of the Bergh and Marie of Nassau, as all his brothers entered the Spanish military service, and distinguished himself by name under Spinola like that after completion of the twelve-year truce the second highest commanding the army of the archduke Albrecht and Isabella was. Because of his military rank, he became leader of the mostly consisting of wealthy nobles National Party in Belgium. This was dissatisfied with the influence of the Spaniards in the army and the Council, and thought of connecting to the Dutch.

The party was to bring in the people and the army without attachments and unable it further than on draft. Henry fled to Liege in 1632 and called the Belgians to take up arms against Spain and the Catholic religion. But few could be recruited by him.

Count Henry ended his life in 1638 in the protection of those he had fought forty years.

Progeny

In 1612 he married Margaretha van Wittem van Beersel ( 1582-1627 ), daughter of Jan van Wittem and Maria Margaretha van Merode. The pair has the following surviving children:

  • Hermann Oswald (1614-1622)

In his second marriage he was married from 1629 Hieronyma Catharina, Countess of Spaur flavone ( 1600-1683 ). She was the daughter of Georg Friedrich von Spaur flavone. The pair has the following surviving children:

  • Amalia Lucia (1633-1711) ∞ Paul Jacob von Waldburg- Zeil
  • Wilhelmina Juliana (1638-1714)
