Willem IV van den Bergh

William IV of the Bergh (* December 24, 1537 at Huis Bergh 's- Heer Mountain, † November 6, 1586 at Schloss Ulft Ulft ), was reigning Count von Bergh said. He was from 1581 to 1583 governor of Gelderland and Zutphen.

Life

William was the eldest son of Oswald II of the Bergh (1508-1546) and his wife Elizabeth of Dorth (around 1505-1545 ). He was a great-grandson of Oswald I. of the Bergh.

In his youth, Wilhelm kept for training in Leuven and at the imperial court in Brussels, where he will probably be met also because the end there still youthful Prince William of Orange. Count William then married on November 11, 1556 his sister Mary at Castle Moers. Shortly after the wedding took a Protestant Court Chaplain at Huis Bergh on his work.

He was a prominent member of the 200 noblemen who banded together in November 1565 to the Eidverbund and on April 5, 1566 presented the statistics they compromise of Breda in Brussels on regent Margaret of Parma.

Philip II sent in 1567 one of Alba led by Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, Duke army to the Netherlands to quell the rebellion. On January 24, 1568 Duke of Alba he was appointed to the council of the unrest, which he chose to his brother William of Orange to Dillenburg to escape. His possessions in the Habsburg Netherlands were confiscated.

In 1572, Wilhelm commanded a small army of about 5,000 mercenaries, financed by his brother William of Nassau- Dillenburg. In the summer he then marched into Gelderland. He was first successfully conquered and in a short time Doetinchem, Zutphen, Deventer, Zwolle, Kampen and Steenwijk. However, he was not finished with the punitive expedition of Fadrique Álvarez de Toledo in the fall and had to flee. The second time he came penniless in Germany. Only after the Pacification of Ghent in 1576, of the amnesty he benefited, he could return to the Netherlands and secure his possession.

Wilhelm competed in 1578 as governor of Gelderland, lost in the election but against Count John VI. of Nassau- Dillenburg. After Johann von Nassau- Dillenburg 1581 went back to Germany at Castle Dillenburg finally won in the election against Wilhelm Graf Adolf von Neuenahr. Despite doubts about his brother William's mind Prince William of Orange appointed him in the spring of 1582 the governor of Gelderland. But before William had sought contact to Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma, to make this know that he would like to be a royal governor of Gelderland.

Both Prince William and the Gelders Chancellor Elbertus Leoninus monitored Wilhelm and he had himself as governor still in contact with Alessandro Farnese. His correspondence with him was intercepted and gave rise to arrest him enough. The Gelders counselors were Wilhelm arrested in Arnhem on November 5, 1583 with the help of the local government. Together with his wife Mary, his three eldest sons Hermann, Friedrich and Oswald, as well as several close to them nobles they were first brought to Zaltbommel and then Delfshaven. With the condition that they move to a neutral place and stay out of the conflict, they were released in the spring of 1584 from prison. Wilhelm did not stick, immediately fled to Brussels and moved to the side of the king, later his sons.

After William's death in 1586, his widow Maria of Nassau inherited the possessions under the strict condition of absolute neutrality.

Marriage and issue

Wilhelm married on November 11, 1556 at Castle Moers Maria ( 1539-1599 ), eldest daughter of William of Nassau. They had the following children:

Trivia

His two daughters Wilhelmina and Juliana are drowned in the Oude IJssel at Ulft together on November 15, 1591 after a bridge had collapsed.
