Towns and villages

The "capital" of the church, where the Town Hall is located is Steenwijk, where about 17,100 people live. To Steenwijkerland further include the town Blokzijl ( 1,400 inhabitants) and Vollenhove ( in the local dialect: Veno ) ( 4,100 inhabitants), the villages Kuinre, Giethoorn ( 2,600 inhabitants), Eesveen, Oldemarkt ( 2,600 inhabitants), Ossenzijl, St. Jansklooster (2,400 inhabitants), Steenwijkerwold ( 1,900 inhabitants), tuk en Zuidveen (actually suburbs of Steenwijk ), and Wanneperveen, each with about 500 inhabitants, and a number of smaller towns with fewer than 500 inhabitants.

Hamlet

Under these hamlets there are some with local flavor name:

  • Nederland, the place names are often stolen by young people, the name means, too: Netherlands or: lowland;
  • Muggenbeet whose name does not: mosquito bite means, but from an old Saxon word for: small stream originates;
  • Witte Paarden, named after an inn, The White Horse;
  • Doosje (origin of name unknown jars );
  • Blauwe Hand (named after an inn );
  • Paasloo, with a mill in the shape of a tub;
  • Jonen, with a ferry for cyclists and pedestrians;
  • Onna, already known in the 14th century, and others.

Location and economic

The municipality covers the entire northwestern corner of the province, bordering Fryslân (Friesland), Flevoland and Drenthe. The capital Steenwijk is up to the car and Railroads Leeuwarden - Meppel - Zwolle - Amersfoort - Utrecht / Amsterdam.

Steenwijk, the supply and administrative center of the region, has many smaller commercial and industrial companies. In Vollenhove there is a shipyard that specializes in the construction of very exclusive yachts. In the whole community, which is partly below sea level and has pretty swampy soils, livestock farming is important, but also tourism. The wetlands, small lakes and canals as well as some scenic spots attract especially nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts.

History

The city Steenwijk received city rights in 1327. In the Eighty Years' War Steenwijk was besieged by the Spaniards from 1580 unsuccessful. The defense of the city was then headed by John Corputius. 1581 gave the Spanish troops at the siege and withdrew. In the following year, Corputius was not now more commander in Steenwijk, the city was besieged again, however, and eventually taken. 1592 was recaptured by the Dutch again.

Blokzijl founded in the 16th century. During the siege of Steenwijk 1580-1581 enhanced " Siel " ( lock ) there was built. The town received its town charter in 1672.

Vollenhove 944 was first mentioned in a document: Emperor Otto the Great had there a forest and granted the bishop of Utrecht the right to hunt. The town was founded in the Middle Ages the castle Tout castle that was destroyed several times. In the 15th century there flourished fishing for sturgeon. How Blokzijl, Vollenhove came in the 17th century to more modest flower by shipping with peat of Drenthe on the Zuiderzee in the rich Holland and by the presence of some rich noble families.

Sint Jansklooster is named after a monastery, which stood there from 1399 until its destruction in 1581.

Giethoorn was built around 1200 as one of the first peat in Dutch history. Oldemarkt had a to 1437 reaching tradition that on St. Lambertustag an important annual fair is held. Until about 1900 found here regularly butter and cattle markets are held, which were the most important in the region.

Kuinre was formerly of the Zuiderzee. It had a harbor and in the Middle Ages, a castle, where the Lords of Kuinre to mischief, they were notorious pirates. In the 17th century the port was attached with a jump.

Attractions

In the city Steenwijk is the Art Nouveau building Ramswoerthe (1899), with an adjoining park. The town has two notable churches ( 15th or 17th century ) and a city scale (1684 built ).

Blokzijl has a marina, in order to group the picturesque houses of the 17th century. It also has a built in the 17th century church.

Vollenhove has two remarkable old churches ( 15th or 17th century ), the ruins Toutenburg with park, the mansion Old Ruitenborgh (18th century and since 1 January 2006, a party center with restaurant and modest hotel) and several old houses, with, among others, the former Latin school (17th century).

Giethoorn and Dwarsgracht, located between Blokzijl and Steenwijk are picturesque villages whose inhabitants carry themselves and their livestock due to lack of roads with " punters " ( small boats ). Many of the farmhouses have been but now converted into a second or holiday homes. The filmmaker Bert Haanstra turned in the 1950s in Giethoorn a film about life in the village, which has greatly stimulated the water sports tourism. In summer, the houses are illuminated at night a few times, allowing a romantic tour.

Between Kuinre and Steenwijk the natural park " Weerribben ", a very valuable " wetland " is ( wetland ), which can be visited with a guide. In the south of the municipality lies the nature park " De Wieden " with some lakes ( Wieden or wijden: wide expanses of water, partly by the dredging of peat originated ) and a similar moorland as " Weerribben ". On the lakes is much sailed. A visitor center is located in the village of Sint- Jansklooster, Vollenhove.

In the area of ​​Oostertors Steenwijk is one in 2003 designed by Hans Kuyper monument to John Corputius. This had in 1581 successfully led the defense of the city against the troops of George of Lalang.

Every year on the third Friday of August there is a flower parade in Sint Jansklooster. The up to 10 meters high wagons that represent scenes from plays, among others, are decorated with hundreds of thousands of dahlias.
