George van Lalaing

George of Lalang, George de Lalang (* 1536 in Hoogstraten, province of Antwerp, Belgium, † July 23, 1581 in Groningen, Netherlands), Baron ( later Count ) de Ville, 4th Earl of Hoogstraten, 1577 Count of Rennenberg and Count of Salm, was oranischer during the Eighty Years war of Independence governors of the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel in the northeast of the Netherlands.

Life

Lalang came of an old family of the county of Hainaut, and was the son of Philip de Lalang (1510-1555), 2nd Earl of Hoogstraten, imperial governor in the duchy of Guelders and Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and the Anne of Rennenberg (c. 1521).

Lalang joined the National Movement in 1576 under William of Orange, but without renouncing Catholicism. William I appointed him out to the governors of all the northeastern provinces.

It was not until the night of March 3, 1580 joined the Catholic Lalaings stock of the Spanish King Philip II, which Spain gained considerable influence.
